OPENDOEK is the organisation that inspires, facilitates, and supports performing arts in leisure time, enabling writers, creators, performers, storytellers, and audiences to develop artistically and socially in a constantly changing society. As an accessible and engaged ally, OPENDOEK keeps its finger on the pulse, with theatre as a medium that connects and empowers.

OPENDOEK is building a theatre and performing arts landscape in which everyone with a passion for theatre (writers, creators, performers, storytellers, and audiences) feels at home. OPENDOEK embraces the hybrid nature of this landscape and does so in a way that gives every individual opportunities, regardless of age, gender, background, disabilities, or socio-economic status. Young people, for example, are mobilised and inspired through JongDOEK, while AGE on stAGE focuses on those aged 55 and over.

In this landscape, a wide range of artistic forms of expression are represented, from niche to popular, from traditional to experimental, allowing performers, creators, storytellers, and companies to develop artistically and socially, with the space and impulses they need for growth, innovation, and experimentation at every level. There are plenty of opportunities to present and perform work, both for individual artists and for companies, reaching broad and diverse audiences in Flanders, Brussels, and abroad. International exchange contributes to artistic inspiration as well as social development.

Cohesion and solidarity are our core values. They guide us in finding different and innovative ways to share resources, networks, and knowledge. We aim to stay strongly connected to a society that is constantly changing, where theatre has an important social impact. This impact is recognised by stakeholders, and that recognition helps ensure there are enough resources to realise theatre’s social potential.

OPENDOEK is an accessible, flexible, and results‑oriented organisation that stays closely connected to society and the wider performing arts field through curiosity and strong engagement. People with a passion for the performing arts can get involved in many ways: as volunteers, performers, storytellers, creators, writers, participants, or audience members.
This leads to a membership of more than 30,000 individuals and over 1,000 affiliated groups. These members can benefit from both organisational and artistic support, such as insurance, advice on copyright, access to a theatre library with more than 30,000 texts, theatre courses, coaching, and development programmes.
We encourage meeting and interaction among our members through festivals, various projects, and dedicated gathering days.

OPENDOEK develops crosssector partnerships, both within the broader arts landscape and across other social domains, as well as within policy at various levels (local, supra‑local, regional, Flemish, federal, and international).
