GDPR: The privacy law in Europe

The “GDPR” has been in force in the European Union since 25 May 2018. This four-letter acronym has a significant impact on every company, organisation, or association that processes personal data, such as maintaining contact lists or running mailing campaigns.

The GDPR, or General Data Protection Regulation in full, is the privacy framework that applies across the entire European Union. These rules apply both to large international players (think of Facebook, Danone, Lufthansa, Apple, Bol.com…) and to smaller organisations and associations operating within Europe.

How can you collect (email) addresses? How can people unsubscribe from your newsletter? Can you keep using collected data indefinitely? Do you need to appoint a DPO within your organisation—and what exactly is a DPO? In short: what is still allowed, and what is no longer permitted?

It is important to look into this carefully, as the regulation remains fully in force and organisations must continuously comply. Its practical application also continues to evolve through case law and guidance from supervisory authorities. The GDPR therefore remains a complex but essential framework for any organisation working with personal data.

GDPR PRESENTATION

Fortunately, there are organisations such as Scwitch (the service provider for organisational management in the socio‑cultural sector).

They developed a presentation that clearly explains how to bring your organisation into compliance.

You can download these presentations here:

EXPLANATION OF THE GDPR PRESENTATION BY SCWITCH

Especially for local associations, Scwitch also created an adapted online explanation to accompany that presentation. You can watch it below, but you should take your time. The presentation lasts a full hour, but afterwards a large part of the GDPR mystery will have been lifted.
