Become a volunteer

Regional representatives are deployed across Flanders and Brussels as ambassadors. As a regional representative you will see a number of performances in your region each year, speak with the theatre companies in your region, represent the organisation at celebrations and honours in your region, and you may be called on to act as a course coordinator for that same region. You can decide how large your commitment will be.

Are you active in amateur theatre yourself, or do you often go to see it? Would you like to help support theatre groups and contribute to building a stronger theatre landscape in Flanders and Brussels? Or are you simply looking for a nice group of people who share the same passion? Then you could be the person we are looking for! As an OPENDOEK volunteer you map needs and ideas from the field.

Are you passionate about photography, film, or social media? Do you have creative ideas, do you enjoy organising activities, or do you quickly strike up a conversation with everyone? OPENDOEK is always looking for what your personal contribution could be.

In return for your commitment, OPENDOEK offers you a free membership with various benefits, expenses are reimbursed, and you are also invited to all our activities, festivals, regional meetings and contact days.

Spots op West is OPENDOEK’s annual site-specific theatre festival in the West Flanders Heuvelland, featuring excellent theatre in unusual locations and plenty of atmosphere and conviviality. It takes place from 9–12 July 2026 in Westouter. Each year we can count on many volunteers before, during and after the festival.

Do you love theatre, music, or festivals and enjoy getting your hands dirty? Would you like to gain experience and knowledge in event technology in a fun way and as part of a great team? Are you handy and not afraid of (sometimes heavier) physical work? Then we’re looking for you!

After the effort comes relaxation, of course. Catch several theatre performances, enjoy a bite and a drink on the cosy terrace, or hit the dance floor in the spiegeltent!

As a volunteer in the Theatre Library, you will help one day a week with the library’s core task: lending books. 

Because we receive orders from across the country, our library mainly operates by post. You would bundle orders, search for books in the archive, lend books via our online catalogue, and send them out by post. You would also help with book maintenance, adding new acquisitions to the catalogue, and reclassifying returned brochures. 

Your profile: 

• You are comfortable using Office programs and catalogue software does not put you off  

• You work accurately and with attention to detail  

• You have a passion for theatre

With our weekly television programme DOEK! (available via Eclips TV and Vimeo) we want to put amateur theatre in the spotlight. To keep producing this programme we want to build a network across Flanders and Brussels of people with a passion for audiovisual arts and theatre.

How can you help as a volunteer?

• As a cameraman/woman: we will contact you when an item needs to be filmed in your region. Then we will check whether you are available on the date in question.

• As an interviewer

• As an editor: process the raw footage into items of a specific number of minutes.

• As a news scout: actively look for interesting theatre news from your region and pass this information on to OPENDOEK.

Do you love theatre, music, or festivals and enjoy getting your hands dirty? Are you sociable? Helpful and assertive? Then we’re looking for you! Some of the locations where performances take place are somewhat remote. For these, we run a free shuttle train. It departs from the Neerplaats (opposite the DOP).

After the effort comes relaxation, of course. Catch several theatre performances, enjoy a bite and a drink on the cosy terrace, or hit the dance floor in the spiegeltent!
